Abstract:
Developmental dyslexia is a specific learning disability characterized by difficulties in fluent reading and further comprehension (e.g., Peterson and Pennington 2012). Dyslexia has a neurobiological origin characterized by distinct eye movement patterns in individuals with dyslexia compared to proficient readers, such as longer fixations, more frequent fixations, and shorter saccades (Rayner, 1998). Nowadays, the latest directions in dyslexia research using eye-tracking pay attention, among others, to dyslexia screening-based artificial intelligence mechanisms (see, e.g., Smyrnakis et al., 2017) aiming at providing objective measures for dyslexia diagnostics enhancement. Nonetheless, to improve dyslexic individual reading skills development, dyslexia diagnosis should be accompanied by an intervention process targeting the individual’s specific reading deficits and readers’ fluency and further comprehension. For this reason, we aim to develop comprehensive intervention software based on tracking eye movements to enhance reading skills in dyslexic readers. This paper aims to introduce the paired reading task using eye-tracking technology playing a role in real-time interactivity, scalability, and further analysis of overall reading performance as a core part of the comprehensive system for supporting the reading process in dyslexics. The paper will be complemented by the results of the pilot study conducted on dyslexic and intact pupils that will be realized in March 2025.
